The Run:
The first part of my run saw heavy fog.  This means I had to make sure that I chose a Sidewalk Only route.  In other words, absolutely NO running where there is only the shoulder of the road, or in some cases, no shoulder at all.

Normally, where no sidewalk is available, I always run “into” the traffic. I do this so that I can see the oncoming traffic.  More importantly, I want to make sure that the oncoming traffic sees me!  A sort of egocentric safety approach!  However when fog becomes a factor, you have to assume that no one is going to be able to see you.  In cases where there is little or no visibility, sidewalks are your best friend! They keep you safe!

Fortunately, the fog burned off quickly this morning.  By mile four, it was clear skies.  In the last mile, endorphins were working their wondrous magic. I felt energy and excitement!  As I turned the corner at a 4-way stop, I saw that traffic was backed up a bit at the intersection. As I passed each of the several dozen cars inching their way toward the stop sign, I tried to make eye contact, wave, or smile with each driver and passenger.  I had the best time!  I loved seeing people smile and wave back! I love seeing that side of people!! What a fun way to finish up my run!

The Mind:
Spent a lot of time thinking about my kids.  (I have four kids.)  My oldest daughter is graduating high school in a few weeks.  Big changes coming for her.  Big changes for the entire family as she prepares to leave home to chase adulthood.  A big part of me is excited for her.  The Dad part of me is more cautious. She is my daughter. So I worry.  But she is smart and resourceful when she needs to be.

I thought too about my oldest son.  He is 21 and lives in Atlanta.  I don’t hear from him much. I hope he is doing alright.

The Journey:
Took in a few sites on this leg of run!

Started off by running this through the strikingly beautiful and interesting campus at Caltech.  Then down through Huntington Library, Art Gallery and Botanical Gardens in San Marino.  I wound my way to Temple City.  I finally finished in front of Rose Donut, where you can grab the best sandwich in town  and enjoy their yogurt bar!  Oh, and donuts!

At this point, I am 50 miles along the way.  Half way to triple digits!!

  1. What a nice run today….sights I’ve seen before. Keep it up! I look forward to your posts each day. 🙂

  2. Are these donuts the ones Karyn mentioned? Do they have hot donuts? I can down quite a few hot donuts without even thinking about the number. The best donuts are warm chocolate covered donuts –with the chocolate icing just set on the outside but warm, thick and gooey underneath! Yum!!!
